U4GM - 7 Elden Ring Items You Should Never Sell — And Why

If you've ever been short on runes in Elden Ring, you’ve probably glanced at your inventory and thought about selling a few items to make ends meet. I've been there. On my first playthrough, I sold what I thought were junk items—only to realize later they were key to some of the best weapons or quest progress. That experience taught me a valuable lesson: not everything with a low rune value is worthless.

Whether you’re a new Tarnished trying to manage your inventory or using a service like Elden Ring Nightreign Boosting to fast-track your builds, knowing what not to sell is just as important as knowing what to keep. Here are 7 Elden Ring items you should never sell—and why they’re more valuable than they seem.

1. Larval Tears

Larval Tears are essential for respec’ing your stats at Rennala. There’s a limited number available per playthrough, so selling even one could cost you a future build rework.

I made this mistake once early on. Later, when I wanted to switch from a strength build to a dex/int hybrid, I didn’t have enough Larval Tears left. Ever since, I treat these as sacred items—worth far more than their rune value.

2. Remembrances

These are dropped by major bosses and can be exchanged for unique weapons or spells. Even if you don’t use the item right away, selling a Remembrance cuts you off from that option permanently unless you duplicate it (and even then, that’s limited too).

During my first run, I sold the Remembrance of the Grafted for a few measly runes. Later, when I learned how powerful the Grafted Blade Greatsword was, I regretted it instantly.

3. Smithing Stones (Especially Somber Ones)

These are critical for upgrading your weapons and Spirit Ashes. Somber Smithing Stones are particularly rare in early- and mid-game, and selling them will delay your build progression severely.

If you’re buying cheap Elden Ring Items to stockpile upgrade materials, that’s fine—but in natural play, these stones are in high demand. Always keep them.

4. Stonesword Keys

These keys unlock fog gates that lead to valuable loot, shortcuts, and even secret bosses. While some may seem skippable, others guard essential items like talismans or rare weapons.

On my second character, I saved every key until the late game—and I’m glad I did. Some of the best rewards are hidden behind multiple imp statues, and without these keys, you’re locked out.

5. Dragon Hearts

Earned from defeating dragons, these are used to unlock powerful Dragon Communion spells. They’re not usable by all builds, but they’re irreplaceable if you decide to go into Faith/Arcane later.

I initially sold mine because I was doing a pure melee build. Big mistake. In my next playthrough, I kept every Dragon Heart and experimented with Dragon spells—they became the highlight of that character’s toolkit.

6. Cracked Pots and Ritual Pots

These containers are used to craft reusable throwing items like Fire Pots, Sleep Pots, and Magic Pots. You only get a set number of them, and once sold, you can’t craft with them again.

I didn’t realize their value until trying out item-based builds, where pots became essential for crowd control and PvP. Luckily, I hadn’t sold them—but I easily could have.

7. Key Quest Items (Even If They Look Useless)

Some quest-related items don’t have clear uses immediately and aren’t marked as key items in your inventory. For example, certain notes, medallions, or tools might seem unimportant but unlock secret areas or events later in the game.

During one blind playthrough, I almost sold the Haligtree Secret Medallion (Right) before realizing it was part of the lift mechanism to access one of the game's biggest late-game areas. From then on, I always double-checked before selling anything remotely unique.

In Elden Ring, runes come and go—but certain items are irreplaceable. Whether you're playing solo, using Elden Ring Nightreign Boosting to unlock content faster, or shopping for cheap Elden Ring Items to round out your loadout, knowing what to keep is key to long-term success.

Treat your inventory like a toolbox, not a pawnshop. And if you ever feel unsure about an item’s importance, stash it in your chest rather than selling it. Future-you will thank you.

If you'd like a checklist of other rare items to avoid discarding—or tips on how to organize your inventory efficiently—just let me know. I'm always happy to share more from personal experience in the Lands Between.
